Reward Them and Become Their Hero
To get the best from your staff, good bosses need to make people interested in helping achieve their goals. But staff have to keep to their side of the bargain.
LOYALTY is the best thing you need from your staff. Without it you are sunk. You can expect it, and you may have to buy it to a certain extent, but it still needs to be earned.
DELEGATE, delegate delegate. It motivates people, makes them part of the team, takes advantage of their talents, and reduces your own workload. But don’t delegate responsibility unless you delegate the necessary authority.
COOPERATION is important, both between the staff and you, and also between all members of your team. Your people must know that if they are not good to you, you will be ghastly to them. Your staff must believe they have just three choices - cooperate and be treated well, refuse to cooperate and be treated badly, or quit.
ENCOURAGE enthusiasm. It is the factor that makes the difference between the employee who gives all-out effort and the one who does the least necessary. Enthusiasm rubs off on other people too.
SHARE knowledge. Your staff should hear important decisions and matters affecting the department from you, not through the office grapevine. They deserve that courtesy. In return, you should expect them to pass on any relevant information to you.
PEOPLE are individuals, and expect to be treated as such. One employee may respond well to a kick up the backside, but others need a gentler approach. Respect their differences - and don’t humiliate them. In return, you should earn their respect.
HERO worship is acceptable in the office - provided you are their hero.
